There is a special kind of silence before a serious chess game begins.

The pieces are set.

The clocks are ready.

The opponent is sitting across the board.

Parents are watching from a distance.

Coaches are hoping the training will show.

Then, with one move, everything begins.

This year, four young players from The Checkmate Club proudly represented our club at the 2026 Canadian Youth Chess Championship (CYCC).

Yugansh Chahar – U14 Open

Vedhika Gireesh – U10 Girls

Ishan Kalivarapu – U16 Open

Sidhek Singh Sandhu – U16 Open

For those who may not know, CYCC is one of Canada's most prestigious youth chess championships. Every year, talented young players from across the country gather to compete in their respective age categories. It is a place where preparation is tested, resilience is built, every game becomes a lesson.

Simply qualifying for this stage is an achievement worth celebrating. Every player arrives with countless hours of practice behind them. Every round demands focus, courage, discipline.

Yugansh, Vedhika, Ishan, Sidhek earned their place through dedication, consistent training, tournament experience, plus a genuine love for the game.

They have spent months solving puzzles, studying positions, analyzing mistakes, playing tournaments, learning from defeats, striving to improve.

Those quiet hours of effort are what make moments like CYCC meaningful.

At The Checkmate Club, we believe success is measured by far more than a final standing.

Success is showing up prepared.

Success is staying calm under pressure.

Success is respecting every opponent.

Success is learning from every game.

Success is becoming a stronger player than yesterday.

That is exactly what national championships help young players achieve.

Chess in Canada has a proud tradition stretching back more than a century.

Events like CYCC continue that legacy by giving young players an opportunity to challenge themselves against some of the country's strongest competitors while creating friendships, memories, lifelong lessons.

Whether a game ends in victory, defeat, or a hard fought draw, every experience at this level contributes to growth. Every move played becomes part of a player's journey.

We are incredibly proud of Yugansh, Vedhika, Ishan, plus Sidhek for representing The Checkmate Club with determination, sportsmanship, professionalism.

Their commitment inspires every student in our community.

To every young chess player reading this, remember that every strong competitor once began with a single lesson, a single tournament, a single dream.

Keep practicing.

Keep learning.

Keep asking questions.

Keep believing in your ability to improve.

One day, your name could be called at a national championship too.

Congratulations to our four Checkmate Warriors for proudly representing our club at the 2026 Canadian Youth Chess Championship.

No matter the outcome of any individual game, you have already made your club, your families, your coaches proud.

The journey continues.
